Let’s face it: going on dates, especially if you typically are the one paying (looking at you, old fashioned gentlemen!), can get very expensive, very quickly. Nowadays, coupon deal-of-the-day sites offer users coupons for half off, sometimes even more, at local restaurants, bars, and other outings. While it may be tempting to bust one of these coupons out on a first date, it’s important to tread lightly. Let’s take a look and figure out if it’s a good idea to use one of those ‘deals’ on your next date.

Julie Spira, an online dating expert, suggests that instead of announcing that you’re using a coupon such as a 2-for-1 clipping at a restaurant, to just hand the coupon to your server either at the beginning or end of the meal, quietly and discreetly. If you speak up, your date might think that you are bragging or don’t think he/she is worth the amount you would have spent without the coupon. Naturally, that’s not what anyone ever means to imply by using a discount, but the prejudices are still there.

More importantly, Spira says that using a deal like one from Groupon on a first date can be awkward, since it’s with someone you just met. She says, “You have a split-second to make a bad impression on a first date. I recommend saving the Groupon or deal-of-the-day offer for future dates once you’re more comfortable with each other." Spira also advises to definitely NOT use a coupon for more than one date in a row, especially  the first few dates. “She may be the coupon queen at the grocery store, but dating a Coupon King just isn’t very sexy. He’ll come across as cheap instead of someone who’s smart about money.”
