By now, you’ve probably heard the term “metrosexual,” a word used to describe men who spend a lot of time and money on their appearance and enjoy stereotypically “non-manly” activities like shopping, theater, and the arts. Some men embrace the metrosexual label, while others wholeheartedly reject it, but what do women think of guys who think nothing of getting a manicure or highlights?
The answer, like much in life, depends on who you ask. Some women love so-called pretty boys, while others prefer men with a more rugged look.
“I don't like to generalize and say every metro guy is the same, but I'm definitely more into the ‘manly’ type of guy,” writes a user on GirlsAskGuys.com. “Hygiene and appearance is important, but shaving and spending a lot of time in the bathroom?! That's crazy.”
ElizaDoolittle893, another Girls Ask Guys user, has a different opinion of metrosexual men.
“They are gorgeous, sweet, gentle, and absolutely amazing and hot,” she writes. “Everything I'd want in a guy! I wish I could get one. Unfortunately, all the tough guys are interested in me.”
Numerous women share their opinions in the GirlsAskGuys thread, but it all comes down to the same thing: some women like metrosexual guys, others don’t. It’s just that simple.
So what does this mean for men? To resort to an old cliché, be yourself. If you’re a metrosexual guy who likes shopping and trips to the salon, don’t be ashamed or try to hide your true self because you’re worried women won’t like it. Sure, some women may dislike your “metrosexual” tendencies, but there are plenty of other women who prefer immaculately-groomed men. Conversely, if you’re a “rugged” guy who hates the mall and refuses to spend more than $10 on a haircut, there’s no need to pretend to be someone you’re not.
In other words, there’s someone out there for everyone, but a great match won’t be able to find you if you’re busy camouflaging your true identity.
