Grab your backpack, Trapper Keeper, and No. 2 pencils. School’s back in session, and today we’re going to learn the basics of writing a quality online dating profile.
Use Capital Letters Properly
Avoid using all caps in your profile, emails, and chats. Why? It comes across as aggressive (think yelling), can be difficult to read, and is something many people can't stand.
Not using capitals at all is also a bad idea, especially with words like I and I’m because it’s confusing and can give people the wrong impression about your grasp of the English language.
I’M A SINGLE MAN LOOKING FOR A REAL WOMAN. ANY TAKERS?
i’m a single woman looking for a real man who doesn’t play games. any takers?
Avoid Text Speak
Some people don’t mind text speak, others can’t stand it. When it doubt, write normally and avoid things like h8, how r u, LOL, and other potentially confusing abbreviations.
How r u? U look gr8.
Use Punctuation Marks Properly
Many singles find excessive punctuation marks distracting and irritating. Why? Excessive punctuation can come across as over-the-top, emotional, and a tad immature. After, all there’s rarely a time when one punctuation mark just isn’t enough.
On the opposite end of the spectrum are people who don’t use punctuation marks at all. This is a bad move as run on sentences are very hard to read. Periods, commas, apostrophes, exclamation points, and question marks are your friend.
I’m looking for someone who doesn’t play games!!! No liars or cheaters!! Is this you???
I’m looking for someone who is serious about dating and doesnt play games no liars and cheaters message me if this is you.
Check Your Spelling
Everybody’s human and you’re bound to make a few spelling mistakes. However, excessive errors can be a big turn off. If spelling isn’t your strong point, run your profile text through a spell checker before posting it online. Also, be aware of the differences between their, there, and they’re, as well as your" and you're.
I’m a funy, easy going guy who likes fishing and huntting. If you like to fish, your the girl for me.
Creating a great online dating profile isn't rocket science, but it does require a little time and attention to detail. For homework, go over your dating profile and take care of any spelling, punctuation, text speak, and capitalization errors.
