We’ve all heard of a “mama’s boy,” but how close is the average man to his mother and how does the mother-son relationship affect a guy’s love life? Glamour set out to answer these questions, and more, in their monthly column about what men think. Here’s what the lady mag learned.

Though “mama’s boy” isn’t the most masculine of terms, 52% of the men Glamour polled consider themselves a mama’s boy. So why are men so attached to their moms?

“She’s the one woman in your life you’re always going to love,” said Sean, 19.

Josh, 30, says it’s easy to open up to a mother. “Moms are sensitive,” he said. “You feel like you can talk to a mom.”

Speaking of talking, how much do men tell mom about the women in their life? According to the poll, 2% of men tell their mom every single detail of their love life, including sex. Around 27% of men have talked to their mom about what’s going on beneath the sheets. The majority of men, 73%, only tell their mom about the important stuff, while a quarter of men only mention their significant other after they’ve gotten engaged.

Of course, not all moms and girlfriends get along. Is this enough to keep a man from popping the question? Sixty-five percent of the men polled said no, though they aren’t above lying to keep the peace. Forty-three percent of men have lied to a girlfriend/wife about what his mom has said about her.

Some people believe that men are attracted to women who are similar to their mother (the same goes for women and fathers). So in what ways are the girls men date similar to their mothers? According to the poll, the answers are looks (7%), hair color (34%), personality (31%), and sense of humor (41%).

Ladies, have you dated a “mama’s boy?” What was it like? Fellas, do you agree with the Glamour poll results?
