Finding the right one is hard enough. Once you are together, how do you make it last? Relationships take work and commitment if they are going to last. Here are a few tips for time-proofing your relationship:
Make sure that both of your needs are attended to.
For both partners to be satisfied, you need to make sure that both of your needs are being addressed. If one person always seems to be letting the other get their way, it can cause resentments that harm the relationship.
Realize that your level of infatuation will rise and fall over the years.
Sometimes you’ll be crazy for each other, and sometimes, you’ll be very huggy roommates. As long as you know that there’s always another upswing on the way, you won’t get tempted to look elsewhere.
Develop your own hobbies, interests and friends.
You each need some space apart as much as you need time together. Making sure that you each have a few separate hobbies ensures that you don’t find yourselves crowding one another. Plus, it means that you’ll both continue to grow as individuals, so, there will always be something new for each of you to learn about the other.
Check in often with each other to make sure everything is going smoothly. If you are dissatisfied with something in the relationship, tell your partner calmly and respectfully. By keeping lines of communication open, you can help keep small irritations from becoming major issues.
