It’s easy to freeze up on a first date and feel that you have nothing to talk about. If you are prone to anxiety in social situations, having a couple of conversation topics in mind in advance can help you feel more confident about your ability to keep the conversation going. A few suggestions:
Use Your Surroundings As Conversation Topics
Look around you: are you in a coffee shop with some great art on the walls? Ask your date which paintings she likes best. In a restaurant with something interesting on the menu? Mention the first time you tried your favorite dish there, and ask your date about his experience eating that cuisine or trying out that restaurant. Being observant can yield a wealth of topics to talk about with your new friend.
Ask Questions About Your Date’s Hobbies
Don’t quiz her. Just ask one or two questions about what she does for fun. Then, it’s okay to inquire to learn more. Answer with some information about what you like to do for fun, too. Listening to the person you are with and responding in ways that show that you care can make a conversation effortless.
Ask About Your Date’s Favorite Music
Everyone has music that they love. Get your date talking about his favorite bands, first concert, or the latest album he bought is a great icebreaker. Talk a bit about your favorite bands, as well, or the last music acts you caught live. Chances are, there will be at least a few that the two of you have in common.
Talk About Travel
Ask your date about the best places he’s visited. Ask about the ones she’d love to see. Volunteer your own answers to these questions. Tell each other anecdotes about your favorite traveling experiences. Everybody wants to see the world. This is one of those topics that anyone can get excited to chat about.
Most of all, it’s important to relax and remember that your date is just another human being. He or she went out with you because you had good chemistry on the dating site. Take an interest in the things that your date has to say and soon enough, you’ll be chatting smoothly and enjoying your conversation.
