Relationships are dependent upon many things like love, trust, honesty and comfort. But what people often leave out is the importance of compromise.
To have a successful relationship you need to be willing to make some sacrifices for the person you love. When you’re single, it’s easy to focus all of your attention on what is most essential for your own happiness, but there comes a time when it isn’t all about you anymore.
One really sincere way to show how much someone means to you is to be able to put their needs, or your needs as a couple, before your individual needs. It could be going to see a chick flick because it’s important to your new crush or being willing to move for a spouse to help further their career. These things come up in all stages of a relationship.
Out of instinct, or at least female instinct, we can be quick to combat serious requests or suggestions that go against our own wants. At these moments I recommend taking a few steps back. Try walking away from the subject for a little while, really thinking through what is the best decision for you as a team would be and then rationally talking out the pros and cons of the subject matter.
Discussing the subject in its entirety and really hearing each other out is the best way to make a final decision, not to mention it strengthens the bond between you. Taking on the issue as a unit will provide you with the comfort of knowing that regardless of how serious the sacrifice is, you’re in it together.
There will definitely be times when your instincts are dead on and the idea or plan thrown your way is a terrible one, but the fact that you took the time to at least listen and tried to comprehend your partner’s desires will earn you some brownie points!
