Everyone has days where they don’t feel quite like themselves, but some people experience that disorientation on a completely different level. A recent study has revealed that there are groups of men and women who report that their sexual identity switches between male and female. They are referring to this as Alternating Gender Incongruity right now and some people are even experiencing the sensation of phantom genitalia or breasts of the non-biological sex!
While the research done hasn’t been deemed conclusive, it is still very suggestive that this condition is in fact a real thing. There were obvious shifts in the subject’s abilities and energy, but they have not yet determined whether it alters hormone levels as well. The majority of people involved said they alternated weekly and a smaller percent said they felt their sexual identity change daily. They documented how they sympathize with others, whether or not their values change and how they react to the feeling of phantom genitalia. One woman involved explained her experience like this:
“I sometimes wake up thinking I have a penis or that I have no breasts…I usually end up in tears and I can’t get out of bed because once I get up I’ll know for sure it’s not really true and it’s just my mind playing tricks on me, so I just lie there and cry. It’s strange though because I normally don’t even want to have a penis.”
Right now, more research is still needed to decipher whether this is some form of multiple personality disorder, role playing or an actual shift in hormone levels. What do you think about the results of this study? Do you think this shift in sexual identity is possible or do you think that the people reporting it are more likely to be role playing or suffering from a multiple personality disorder? We want to hear your thoughts! Sound off in the comment section below!
