As of the first of the year, same sex couples could legally marry in the state of Maryland. Same sex marriage was approved by the legislature in March, 2012. Opponents gathered enough signatures to put a ban onto the ballot in November, but the measure was overwhelmingly defeated by Maryland voters.

The first same sex couple exchanged vows just after midnight. Jim Scales and William Tasker have been together for 35 years. William told CNN that, when he and Jim met in 1977, he didn’t think that he’d ever see the day when two men could marry.

Last month on our sister site, MyDot, we reported on an unusual “living installation” in the National Art Museum of Ukraine. In the exhibit, specially screened “princesses” would sleep – or pretend to sleep – on a raised platform in the middle of the room. It’s almost official: a pro-gay marriage stance will be part of the Democrat’s election platform. The group of Democrats drafting the party’s platform unanimously concluded that marriage equality should be included. While the decision is not final, this could become the first time in history that gay marriage has been included in a major party’s platform.

Earlier this week, Florida State Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen publicly affirmed her support of same-sex marriage, which makes her the first Republican congressman to publicly espouse that view.

LGBT News on Planet Love Match

Some are calling it too little while some call it too much: The Episcopal Church, with the support of about 3/4 of lay and clergy members, voted to allow blessing ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples. While they have been clear to state that the new blessing is not a marriage, the Episcopal Church is now the largest church in the United States to give recognition and support to same sex relationships.
