In a Valentine's Day victory, the Illinois state Senate passed a measure today to legalize same-sex marriage, in a vote of 34-21. The bill goes to the House next, and Governor Pat Quinn has indicated if it ends up on his desk, he would sign the bill. Happy Valentine's Day, indeed.

It's taking a little longer than people initially assumed it would, but on Thursday, the Illinois Senate Executive Committee passed legislation to approve same-sex marriage in the state. It's the first hurdle the bill has jumped, and if passed, Illinois would become the tenth state in the union to approve same-sex marriage.

In a promising decision, Judge James Ware issued an order in which same-sex couple will be allowed to marry in the state of California. The federal court case was one that was challenging Proposition 8, the state's amendment that limits marriage to one man and one woman, and closing the case officially nullifies the amendment.

Nabisco showed their support for the LGBT community Monday by uploading a unique image of their Oreo cookie. The image has, as of this writing, received over 200,000 Likes and has been shared more than 65,000 times.
While the usual naysayers showed up, response was overwhelmingly supportive. The post received hundreds of positive comments. "Thank you Oreo for supporting the gay community, even though cookies are empty calories I will buy a pack today!" said one commenter. Another posted, "I rarely buy Oreos because I tend to eat the whole bag in one sitting. I'm going out to buy two bags today just to support your company."

At this year's annual Gay Pride Parade in New York, marchers had something wonderful to celebrate -- the one year anniversary of the law that brought marriage equality to the state. On June 24, 2011, New York legislators passed The Marriage Equality Act making same sex marriage legal. New York was the fifth state to legalize same sex marriage, and remains the largest state to do so. About eight thousand marriage licenses have been issued to same sex couples in New York.
