Imagine that you join a niche community looking for someone who shares your love of Renaissance Festivals. You sign up and post a cute picture of yourself in your favorite period garb. You talk about your favorite festival and the characters you’ve loved playing on your profile. You are enjoying yourself and having fun with it. You might even get a few responses that could lead to a meaningful connection.
Then you decide to meet someone. You suggest an afternoon date at the area Renaissance Festival; it seems plausible since you both share that interest. Or do you? In the spirit of the event you wear your costume, while your date shows up in jeans and a t-shirt circa 2011. That’s when you realize that your date really isn’t into the Renaissance theme, but he did a great job convincing you he was.
