Healthy people never think about how a disease or ailment could affect their chances for romance, but thousands of men and women struggle with the difficulties a disease can bring to one’s love life. Here are a few simple tips for men and women facing this problem.
Be Honest
It’s generally best to be honest about a health problem, but that doesn’t mean you need to spill the beans right away. Diane Maps, a breast cancer patient and author of How to Date in a Post-Dating World, says everyone has baggage and that it’s best to talk about health issues after you’ve connected with someone special.
"Do people tell you they come from an alcoholic background or were sexually abused as a child on the first date,” she asks a Seattle advice columnist. “No! She [a former cancer patient asking for advice] should get to know them with a first or second date to see if she likes them and if they like her—and then tell them once she thinks it's appropriate."
That said if you and date are getting intimate, you should definitely let the person know about an STD or other contagious ailment, regardless of how long you’ve known one another.
