As of the first of the year, same sex couples could legally marry in the state of Maryland. Same sex marriage was approved by the legislature in March, 2012. Opponents gathered enough signatures to put a ban onto the ballot in November, but the measure was overwhelmingly defeated by Maryland voters.

The first same sex couple exchanged vows just after midnight. Jim Scales and William Tasker have been together for 35 years. William told CNN that, when he and Jim met in 1977, he didn’t think that he’d ever see the day when two men could marry.

A recent study indicates that cold feet can be a sign of bad things to come. Researchers found that women who had doubts before the wedding were two and a half times more likely to divorce in the first for years of marriage. And, among those who stayed married, they reported lower levels of satisfaction with the relationship than those who had no doubts going in.
